Biography

Dr. Lapuente received his undergraduate degree from University of Memphis where he also played college soccer. He attended medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He completed his internship and residency at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. He then finished a fellowship at University of Missouri, Kansas City, The Children’s Mercy Hospital, where his area of research focused on exhaled nitric oxide.

Prior to working at Carolina Asthma and Allergy Center (CAAC), Dr. Lapuente was in private practice in upstate New York. He moved south in 2005 and joined CAAC. For fun, Dr. Lapuente enjoys listening to his son perform music, playing soccer with his daughter, and watching international soccer matches.

I saw Dr.LaPuente for the first time last year, and was so happy with the course of treatment he recommended to help my allergy issues. Saw Dr. LaPuenta again today as an annual follow-up and to get refills for my allergy meds. Just happened to be at a time where my symptoms were a little worse than normal, and he noticed the post-nasal stuff when he examined my throat. He suggested a change to the dose during periods like this, and was going to make the change to my RX. I appreciate that he checks to ensure the treatment works most of the time, and that he suggested an alternative during periods where allergies are a bit worse. Besides that, Dr. LaPuenta has a dry sense of humor that I appreciate. :)

As Dr Lapuente has changed between various offices over the years, so have we. Wherever he lands, we schedule our kiddo’s appointment at that location. His bedside manner is unlike anything I’ve ever seen and he relates with both children and adults appropriately and effectively, which is hard to come by. He’s very knowledgeable but explains things in a way that we can easily understand and he’s very willing to take the time to answer questions. We have had to wait an extended time at appointments before but I’ve been ok with that because I know it means that all of his patients are consistently receiving the same attentive care that my child is. Dr. LaPuenta is a knowledgeable doctor with a good sense of humor. I was treated with a great deal of respect, and he made it clear that he would provide finding from initial tests, offer options (including “doing nothing”) for additional testing and treatment, and I could select whatever course of action I was most comfortable with. He also would provide his opinion on treatment if you wanted him to offer it, which of course I did! I appreciated that he didn’t follow a “one size fits all” approach, and he provided information on conditions I didn’t know even existed. Turns out it appears I have one of those conditions, and the meds he prescribed actually improved my symptoms that same day. I would definitely recommend him!

I was really impressed with Dr. Michael Lapuente. I have had a very good long term and fairly documented/ tested immunotherapy program, yet I loved how in our first meeting Dr. Lapuente asked me to look at the big picture and assess the value and effectiveness of the therapy from my perspective. This made me feel very good about him because I’m a big believer in truly measuring effectiveness vs. costs/risks/time investment etc., in order to have great long term health system that best serve’s patients . The other thing that impressed me was the quality of time and the level of conversation and education. It is clear Dr. Lapuente is following his calling.

My child has been experiencing hives for ~8 weeks. (Attached photo is example of hives that my child has had off/on for almost 2 months) Primary care did some work up + meds then sent us here. Dr Lapuente has great bedside manner. Listened to history and what we have tried/done for the hives so far. Expressed concern and understanding of what my child is dealing with. Thoroughly explained his professional viewpoint and came up with a plan of action. I also see him for myself after I had a very poor experience at a different allergy/immunology practice in S.Charlotte. Would rate 5/5 for myself as well in dealing with my health needs. Would highly recommend Dr Lapuente to anyone needing an allergist in the Charlotte or Union County areas.

I visited Dr. Lapuente after suffering from shortness of breath and wheezing caused by severe allergies. It was my first visit and Dr. Lapuente listened very carefully and patiently to my history, provided detailed explanations to every test that was conducted on me, explained the treatment plan several times with all the warnings and contraindications. My previous doctor left the practice, and so I was switched to Dr. Lapuente. He took the time to chat through the situation with me, and come up with a plan of action that included my input. Aside from great "bedside" manner, he also explained things to me using the correct terminology (something I love!), and not dumbing it down with assumptions about my intelligence. First round of allergy skin testing with my 6 year old. Dr Lauente thoroughly reviewed her history and then immediately performed the skin testing. He was prompt to return to the exam room 15 minutes later to read the results. The appointment did not feel rushed at all. After getting the results he spent at least 30 minutes explaining the results and going over all of the available treatment options. My daughter commented that all of the staff were the nicest people she had ever met. Very good experience!!!
